Patient Blood Management

LifeSouth provide the best possible service to our hospital partners and patients. We continuously evaluate our blood supply in new ways to efficiently manage this vital resource. Patient Blood Management has become critical to patient safety and blood product inventory management. LifeSouth is proud to partner with Transfuse Solutions to provide guidance and expertise in blood transfusion as a service to our hospitals.

Transfusions are one of the most commonly performed medical procedures in hospitals, yet every blood transfusion represents a risk for the patient. To avoid unnecessary transfusions, many hospitals are implementing patient blood management systems that will establish more standardized criteria for determining the necessity of transfusion. Focusing on patient blood management will encourage and assist physicians in making the appropriate medical decisions on a patient-by-patient basis.

We work with our partners to ensure prudent transfusion decisions and to provide the best care for the patients we serve. Our Medical Directors are available and excited to participate in our partners’ Blood Utilization Review Committees to provide consultation in current best practices and work with Transfusion safety officers, who act as champions within the hospitals overseeing blood management, encouraging peer-to-peer teamwork, and facilitating the most effective transfusion solutions.

Lab + IRL Services

Immunohematology Reference Laboratory Information

LifeSouth operates Immunohematology Reference Laboratories (IRLs) in Gainesville, FL and Atlanta, GA, offering a complete array of immunohematology testing with state of the art technology for patients across our entire footprint. Our multiple sites allow for faster testing turnaround times and efficient provision of specialized blood products in a large geographic area. Our dedicated plane moves samples and blood products throughout our service area daily, getting the products you need to your patients.

Our special antigen unit (SAU) program currently ships around 400 antigen negative units a week and specializes in rare red cell phenotypes. We currently operate both the BioArray™ HEA Beadchip™ and Grifols IDCoreXT™ genotyping technologies in-house, and have typed tens of thousands of our donors to meet the needs of our partners’ complex patient populations. We also offer these technologies for molecular typing for predictive red cell phenotype in patients.

Our IRL and Medical Directors additionally provide Transfusion Services to hospitals and facilities in the Southeast. LifeSouth is committed to education and works regularly with residents, fellows, and blood bank trainees, as well as offering a licensed Medical Technologist training program. Bill Martinez, MS, MT(SBB), LSSBB serves as LifeSouth’s Technical Director and Chris Lough, M.D. serves as Laboratory Director.

Therapeutic Services

Therapeutic Apheresis Information

LifeSouth has been providing therapeutic apheresis services successfully for over 37 years. We employ a team of 7 nurses with over 70 years of combined nursing experience. All of our therapeutic apheresis team staff are highly trained and are in compliance with the requirements of AABB and ASFA.

We follow the latest evidenced based guidelines from the American Society for Apheresis (ASFA) in making clinical therapeutic apheresis decisions and our SOPs are in line with those recommendations.

LifeSouth currently serves five major hospital systems with therapeutic apheresis services in selected areas. We use state of the art machines and blood warmers, specifically the Spectra Optia from Terumo.

Medical consultation is available 24/7 as needed by medical directors who have all completed fellowship training in transfusion medicine, which included necessary apheresis experience. These directors sign off on apheresis SOPs, nurse training and procedures plus generally oversee the service operations.

Economies of scale and cross utilization of technology enable LifeSouth to offer affordable therapeutic apheresis services to many regions. Utilization of these services enables hospitals to provide high quality service to their patients without investment in expensive equipment and training of staff.
